Issued to commemorate the 2002 Commonwealth Games held across four host cities in England — Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, and London — this gold proof was part of a four-coin series, each representing one city. The Manchester games were the first Commonwealth Games held in England since Edinburgh in 1970, and the first time the event returned to the country since the 1986 Edinburgh correction that stripped South Africa's readmission bid.
The Spink reference K12 places this among a small mintage run typical of Royal Mint gold proofs of this period, issued primarily for collectors rather than circulation. Frosted relief against mirror fields.
