The Falcon of the Plantagenets is the fifth release in the Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts series, drawn from the heraldic supporters used at Elizabeth II's 1953 coronation. The white falcon derives specifically from the badge of Edward IV, adopted by the House of York during the fifteenth century and later absorbed into Tudor heraldry — a deliberate political appropriation of Plantagenet symbolism by a dynasty anxious to legitimize its claim after Bosworth.
The series was designed by Jody Clark, who also executed the definitive fifth-portrait effigy of the Queen adopted for circulation coinage in 2015.
