Pobjoy Mint has produced wildlife issues for South Georgia since the 1990s, operating under license from the territory's government as one of the few private mints with a long-running franchise on British Overseas Territory coinage. The southern elephant seal, the world's largest seal species, breeds almost exclusively on sub-Antarctic islands — South Georgia holds one of the largest breeding colonies anywhere.
KM#81 places this among a well-documented run of South Georgia fauna issues, none of which saw significant circulation given the territory's permanent population of zero.
