Dame Vera Lynn died in June 2020 at the age of 103, and this piedfort followed as part of the Royal Mint's commemorative program two years later. The piedfort format — struck on a doubled-thickness flan — has been a Royal Mint specialty since the 1980s and is produced exclusively for collectors, never entering circulation.
Lynn's connection to the Second World War is specific: she performed for troops in Burma, Egypt, and India between 1944 and 1945, often under difficult logistical conditions that most ENSA performers avoided.
