Alderney was the only British territory occupied by German forces during World War II, a fact that gives this commemorative issue a weight most D-Day coins lack. The island's civilian population had been evacuated in June 1940; those who remained or returned were subject to forced labor directives and, in some cases, deportation. The liberation of Alderney came on 16 May 1945, a week after VE Day, making it one of the last pieces of British soil to be freed.
The States of Alderney began issuing commemorative coinage in the early 1990s, with KM#7 among the first series tied to the 50th anniversary cycle of wartime events.
