Gibraltar's Christmas coin series, running annually since 1988, is one of the longest-running seasonal issues from any British Overseas Territory. The 2020 edition appeared during the first Christmas under COVID-19 restrictions, when Gibraltar — despite its small population of roughly 34,000 — had implemented some of the strictest lockdown measures in the British sphere, a circumstance that gave the seasonal release an unusually pointed irony that year.
