The silver inner field presents two facing busts in high relief: to the left, the bearded profile of Charles Darwin facing right, and to the right, the face of a great ape facing left, the juxtaposition evoking Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. Continuing onto the gold-coloured outer ring, additional relief detail suggests a primate figure at the left and the outline of a map at the right. The legend 1809·DARWIN·2009 arcs along the upper outer ring, while TWO POUNDS is inscribed along the lower outer ring in larger lettering. |
