The Britannia bullion and proof series underwent a significant security overhaul beginning in 2013, when the Royal Mint introduced a latent image and surface animation technology developed in-house — measures specifically designed to counter the wave of Chinese-produced counterfeits that had flooded the market in the preceding years. The milled edge encoding, added incrementally across this date range, made the Britannia one of the most technically sophisticated mass-produced silver proofs issued by any sovereign mint.
The .925 standard used here is softer than the .999 fine silver of the bullion strikes, a deliberate choice to improve die life and surface retention in proof production.
