South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands issue coins primarily as revenue-generating collectibles — the territory has no permanent civilian population and no circulating economy. The "Blue Squid" piece belongs to a broader series highlighting the extreme marine fauna of the Southern Ocean, where Galiteuthis glacialis, the glass squid, inhabits some of the coldest and least-explored waters on the planet.
