Issued to mark the Queen Mother's 90th birthday in 1990, this is the silver variant of a dual-composition release — KM#83 being the copper-nickel circulation strike, with KM#83a reserved for the proof and collector market. The Queen Mother had been Colonel-in-Chief of several regiments and held a particular association with the Channel Islands dating to the postwar years, when the monarchy's relationship with the occupied islands was carefully rebuilt after five years of German administration.
