A propeller-driven fighter aircraft — consistent with a Supermarine Spitfire — dominates the upper right of the inner field, its propeller and fuselage rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished background. The scene commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain (1940), evoking Churchill's famous tribute 'Never was so much owed by so many to so few.'
