Jersey Zoo — officially the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust — was founded by Gerald Durrell in 1959 with the explicit mission of breeding endangered species for reintroduction, not public spectacle. The green turtle featured in this series reflects Durrell's early and sustained focus on reptile conservation at a time when most Western zoos considered such programs peripheral. The 60th anniversary issue appeared the year before the COVID pandemic effectively shuttered the zoo's visitor income, making 2019 the last relatively normal fundraising year for some time.
