Jersey Zoo — formally the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust — was founded by Gerald Durrell in 1959 after years of rejection from established institutions unwilling to back his conservation-first model. The gorilla connection runs deep: the zoo became one of the earliest facilities to prioritize behavioral welfare and breeding programs for western lowland gorillas at a time when most zoos still treated great apes primarily as exhibit attractions.
