The surrounding nickel-brass ring carries the legend ELIZABETH II·D·G·REG·F·D·2 POUNDS·2017, interrupted by separating dots, rendered in upright serif capitals. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | The reverse, designed by Dan Flashman, presents a dramatic close-up aerial view of a World War One biplane seen from directly above, its twin wings and nose-mounted rotary engine rendered in precise mechanical detail against a stylised patchwork landscape below suggestive of the Western Front as seen from the air. Bursting anti-aircraft shell fragments are scattered across the lower field, evoking the aerial combat environment of 1914–1918. The date 1914 · 1918 arcs across the upper field within the coin's inner circle, while the legend THE WAR IN THE AIR curves along the right side of the ring. The designer's initials HDG appear to the left of the fuselage. |
