The Liberation of the Channel Islands on 9 May 1945 ended nearly five years of German occupation — the only British territory to fall under Nazi control during the war. Guernsey's civilian population had endured forced labor requisitions, food shortages severe enough to cause starvation by early 1945, and the deportation of British-born residents to internment camps in Germany. The fiftieth anniversary in 1995 was marked across the islands with ceremonies that drew surviving veterans and former deportees.
