Alderney, the smallest of the four main Channel Islands with a population under 2,500, gained the right to issue its own coinage in 1983 — a privilege distinct from Guernsey, under whose bailiwick it formally falls. This 1992 silver proof was produced to mark Elizabeth II's 40th anniversary year, the same year the Queen famously described as her "annus horribilis" in a November speech at the Guildhall, following the separation of three of her children and the Windsor Castle fire.
