Jersey's 1997 £2 predates the Royal Mint's domestic bimetallic £2 by one year — the UK's own version only entered general circulation in 1998, despite having been issued in limited commemorative form earlier. Jersey, operating its own currency under the authority of the States assembly rather than the Crown's Treasury, had no obligation to align its release schedule with Westminster.
