Alderney's position in the Channel Islands gave it a particular proximity to the Second World War that most British dependencies did not share — it was the only British territory with a permanent civilian evacuation followed by full German occupation from 1940 to 1945, including the construction of forced-labor camps on the island itself. That history lends Remembrance issues from Alderney a weight of local specificity that comparable pieces from other Crown Dependencies simply lack.
