The 1967 Gibraltar sovereignty referendum — in which 99.6% of voters chose to remain under British rule rather than pass to Spain — remains one of the most lopsided democratic results in modern European history. Spain's response was to close the border entirely, a blockade that lasted until 1985. This coin marks the 50th anniversary of that vote.
