| Reverse description | The reverse, designed by Matt Dent, depicts a portrait of Sir Winston Churchill at a microphone in an oratorical pose, rendered in the copper-nickel centre field. Two of Churchill's most celebrated quotations appear in facsimile script across the design: 'We Shall Never Surrender' and 'Never in the Field of'. The title 'THE ORATOR' is inscribed prominently above the central effigy. The outer nickel-brass ring carries a continuous circular legend reading 'I AM SORRY TO HAVE MADE SUCH A LONG SPEECH, BUT I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO WRITE A SHORTER ONE', referencing Churchill's famous aphorism on brevity. |
