This coin belongs to a series the Royal Mint launched to exploit renewed public interest in Arthurian legend, with Merlin serving as the second release following a 2022 Arthur issue — the first year of the series also being the first year of Charles III's reign. The timing was entirely deliberate; the Mint has long used folklore subjects to drive collector premiums on silver proofs, where margins far exceed circulating coinage.
Struck to .999 fineness rather than the traditional sterling .925, a specification the Royal Mint adopted more broadly for modern bullion-adjacent proofs to compete directly with sovereign mint products from Perth and the PAMP refineries.
