Little John is the second release in the Royal Mint's Robin Hood series, continuing a broader push into folkloric British subjects that began gaining commercial traction after the success of earlier mythological issues. The Robin Hood legend has no single authoritative medieval source — it accumulated across ballads from roughly the 14th century onward, with Little John appearing prominently in "A Gest of Robyn Hode," one of the earliest extended texts, likely printed around 1500.
Struck to .999 fineness rather than the traditional sterling .925, placing it among the Mint's modern bullion-adjacent proofs rather than its historically grounded commemorative programme.
