The piedfort format — struck at double thickness on a standard-diameter flan — has been a Royal Mint collector convention since its modern revival in 1982, when the practice was reintroduced for the 20p piece. These are not circulation strikes at any weight; they are purpose-built for sets and have never traded hands as money.
HMS Beagle completed three survey voyages between 1831 and 1843, the second of which carried Charles Darwin. The 1831–36 passage was primarily a hydrographic mission; Darwin's presence as an unofficial naturalist was almost incidental to the Admiralty's actual objectives.
