| 背面描述 | A finely detailed depiction of HMS Beagle under full sail occupies the central field, the three-masted barque shown underway on stylised waves. The inner field is framed by an elaborate ornamental border on the raised outer ring, featuring entwined foliage, Galapagos tortoises, and marine creatures in relief, referencing the natural history discoveries of Darwin's famous voyage. The inscription HMS BEAGLE appears in the lower exergue in bold incuse lettering, with the engraver's initials WW situated in the field to the lower right of the vessel. |

HMS Beagle made four voyages in total, but it is the second — departing Plymouth in December 1831 — that reshaped biological science. Darwin was not the ship's primary purpose; he sailed as an unpaid gentleman companion to Captain Robert FitzRoy, who feared the psychological isolation of command. The Admiralty's original mission was hydrographic survey of the South American coastline, work that consumed the bulk of five years at sea.
This is the first UK decimal coin to commemorate the Beagle under Charles III's effigy.
