Beowulf is the longest surviving Old English poem, preserved in a single manuscript — the Nowell Codex — held at the British Library and dating to somewhere between 975 and 1025 AD. The poem itself is considerably older, with composition estimates ranging as far back as the 8th century. The Royal Mint has been steadily expanding its literary and mythological bullion series, and this piece falls squarely into that commercial push rather than any commemorative obligation.
