The Battle of the Atlantic ran from 1939 to 1945 — the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War. Gibraltar's role was not incidental: the Rock controlled the western entrance to the Mediterranean, and its naval base coordinated convoy escort operations across the approaches. German U-boats sank over 3,500 Allied merchant vessels during the campaign, making the convoy system, however imperfect, the decisive factor in keeping British supply lines from collapse.
Gibraltar has issued prolifically in recent decades under bimetallic formats, with many pieces aimed squarely at the thematic collector market rather than circulation.
