Charles Theodor inherited Bavaria in 1777 following the extinction of the Wittelsbach-Sulzbach line, immediately triggering the War of the Bavarian Succession as Joseph II moved to absorb much of the territory. Prussia's intervention blocked the annexation, but the episode left Bavaria politically weakened and Charles Theodor widely despised — he had initially agreed to cede large portions of his new electorate to Austria. This small copper issue circulated through a reign defined more by court intrigue in Munich than by any meaningful domestic reform.
