Issued by the Offenbacher Schrauben Industrie — a screw and fastener manufacturer in Mühlheim am Main — this zinc notgeld token dates from the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany during and immediately after World War I. Municipalities and private firms alike were forced to produce their own emergency coinage when hoarding stripped circulation of copper and bronze. Factory-issued tokens of this kind were typically redeemable only at company-affiliated facilities, functioning as a closed monetary circuit tied directly to the issuing employer.
