| Obverse description | The obverse is set on a cream ground with a decorative scrollwork underprint in grey-green, framing the central text block in Fraktur (blackletter) script. Bamberg's notgeld issues of 1920 emerged from the same acute small-change shortage that forced hundreds of German municipalities and private firms to print their own emergency fractional currency after the war. J. Rosenfelder was almost certainly a local merchant or tradesman — the issuer category is private commercial, not municipal — meaning this 2 Pfennig piece would have circulated as a kind of in-store scrip, redeemable at the counter rather than freely negotiable across the city.
Private issuer notgeld at this denomination is among the most ephemeral material of the period. Printed cheaply, spent quickly, rarely saved.
