Düren's textile industry was among the most concentrated in the Rhineland, and Heimbach was one of its dominant firms — a wool and yarn manufacturer whose operations were substantial enough to warrant issuing private factory tokens during the notgeld period. These zinc pieces circulated as internal currency among workers, typically redeemable at company-controlled stores, effectively tying wages back to the employer.
