Leonard of Keutschach, Archbishop of Salzburg from 1495 until his death in 1519, was among the most politically combative prelates of his era — he expelled the entire citizenry of Salzburg in 1511 after a prolonged dispute over civic rights, a move without close parallel in the archbishopric's history. This klippe, struck in the final year of his rule, belongs to a small-denomination series produced under his authority as the archbishopric maintained its own mint at a moment when Habsburg pressure on ecclesiastical coinage rights was tightening considerably.
