Privately issued factory tokens like this one — struck in iron during the notgeld-heavy years of the early Weimar period — served as internal scrip when small-denomination coinage disappeared from circulation entirely. Ernst Petzold Jr.'s Holzindustrie operation was modest enough that numismatic documentation of this piece relies almost entirely on the Menzel corpus, with no surviving production records known to specialists.
