Union-Werke G.m.b.H. was a Dresden-area industrial firm that issued notgeld coinage during the acute metal and currency shortages of the early Weimar period. Factory-issued pfennig pieces like this one were a pragmatic response to the chronic lack of small change — workers needed something to make purchases in company canteens and cooperatives when official coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Zinc was the material of necessity, not preference, selected because strategic metals remained tightly controlled in the post-armistice economy.
