Mayer's in Pforzheim was among the most prolific private medal and token manufacturers in nineteenth-century Germany, supplying notgeld, trade tokens, and commemorative strikes to municipalities and commercial clients across the region. This piece is a house token — issued by the firm for its own internal or promotional use rather than for a paying client, a practice common among prestige-seeking minting establishments of the Wilhelmine period.
The Pforzheim facility remained in continuous operation through both World Wars, a rarity among German private mints.
