Hercules Werke A.-G. was a Nürnberg-based industrial firm that issued its own token currency for use within its facilities — a common practice among large German manufacturers during the acute small-change shortages of the early 1920s, when official coinage was being hoarded or melted faster than the mints could replace it. Zinc was the default material precisely because it had negligible intrinsic value, discouraging the kind of metal speculation that plagued copper and brass issues.
