Wacker & Doerr operated a quarry in Niederramstadt, a village in Hessen, and issued this iron notgeld token during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany during and immediately after World War I. Private firms, municipalities, and cooperatives across the country produced millions of such pieces to keep wages payable and canteen purchases functional when official coinage had been hoarded or melted.
Iron was the material of necessity — copper and nickel had been requisitioned for the war effort by 1916, leaving issuers little choice.
