2 Pfennig - Maximilian of Horrich

Corvey Abbey's temporal coinage authority was a perennial source of friction with neighboring secular powers, and by the early eighteenth century the abbacy's right to strike copper small change was increasingly contested. The 2 Pfennig issues of Maximilian of Horrich — who served as prince-abbot from 1714 until his death in 1721 — fall within a period when many ecclesiastical mints in the Holy Roman Empire were producing copper fractions largely to assert jurisdiction rather than meet genuine monetary demand.

KM#127 is poorly documented in contemporary mint records, and surviving examples are scarce enough that die varieties have not been systematically catalogued.
