| Obverse description | Within a raised square frame at center, the trademarked emblem of Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik (BASF) occupies the field. Surrounding the central square, the issuer legend arcs along the upper and lower borders, reading BADISCHE ANILIN & SODA FABRIK above and LUDWIGSHAFEN A. RH. below, with the date 1918 incorporated into the legend. The border is decorated with a beaded inner rim typical of German Notgeld issues of the First World War period. |

BASF issued its own emergency coinage in 1918 as the German imperial government's wartime metal requisitions drained zinc, copper, and nickel from civilian circulation. The Ludwigshafen plant — by then one of the largest chemical complexes in the world and already deeply embedded in Germany's war production through its fixation of nitrogen for explosives — had enough institutional scale to justify a private scrip system for its workforce. Factory token coinage of this kind circulated exclusively within company premises and company-run shops, effectively substituting for Reichsmark small change that simply no longer existed.
