Obverse description Central field displays the crowned Hessian lion rampant within an oval shield, rendered in high relief. The shield is flanked on either side by decorative palm or laurel branches, forming a cartouche-like surround. Above the shield, a large electoral crown surmounts the composition. The initials H and D, standing for Hessen-Darmstadt, appear to the upper left and right of the crown respectively, serving as the sole legend on this face.
