Lippe's guardianship coinage of 1785 fills an administrative gap left when the reigning count died before his heir came of age. Louis Henry Adolphus, as guardian regent, had the legal authority to strike coin in the minor Frederick William Leopold's name — a procedural necessity for a territory that could not allow a vacuum in issuing authority, however brief.
