Ilse-Wohlfahrts-Gesellschaft m.b.H. was the welfare subsidiary of the Ilse lignite mining operation in the Lausitz region — one of the largest open-cast brown coal enterprises in early twentieth-century Germany. These company scrip notes, issued by the colliery's own welfare society rather than by the mine directly, were redeemable at the company store and canteen, effectively keeping wages circulating within the employer's own economy.
Starke & Sachse of Grossenhain were prolific printers of German notgeld and corporate scrip. A 2 Pfennig denomination is among the smallest practical values issued in this format.
