Halberstadt's iron Notgeld issues emerged from the acute metal shortages of the First World War, when the imperial government progressively stripped copper and other non-ferrous metals from civilian coinage to feed weapons production. Municipal and district authorities across Germany were left to improvise, issuing locally validated emergency money in whatever materials remained available.
