Halberstadt's iron Notgeld issues emerged from the acute metal shortages of the First World War, when the imperial government progressively stripped copper and other non-ferrous metals from civilian coinage to feed weapons production. Municipal and district authorities across Germany were left to improvise, issuing locally validated emergency money in whatever materials remained available. Iron was the unglamorous fallout of that policy.
The Funck 185.3B designation places this among a documented series of Landkreis issues, distinct from the city of Halberstadt's own parallel Notgeld production — a bureaucratic distinction that mattered locally and still matters to specialists sorting the type today.
