Ardeltwerke was a heavy machinery manufacturer in Eberswalde, Brandenburg, best known for producing cranes and industrial lifting equipment. Like many large German industrial employers during the hyperinflation crisis of 1921–1923, the firm issued its own notgeld coinage to pay workers when the Reichsbank could not supply adequate small change — zinc being the cheapest workable metal available at the time.
Factory-issued pfennig pieces of this type rarely traveled far; they were redeemed at company canteens or stores and seldom entered general circulation.
