Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel's copper pfennig coinage of this period was largely a practical matter of filling the lowest denominations that silver couldn't economically serve. Charles I ruled the principality from 1735 until his death in 1780, and his reign saw the duchy entangled in the Seven Years' War — Brunswick troops fought alongside Prussian forces, and the financial strain on the smaller German states during that conflict was considerable. Copper small change was struck with little ceremony and circulated hard.
Welter 2780 distinguishes this type within a crowded field of nearly identical north German pfennig issues from the same decades.
