Hesse-Cassel's minor coinage of the 1680s was produced under Landgrave Charles, who came to power in 1670 and spent much of his reign reorganizing the landgraviate's finances after the devastation of the Thirty Years' War had hollowed out both population and treasury. A 2 Pfennig piece in silver at this weight sits at the extreme low end of the denomination hierarchy — functionally a scratch coin, produced in quantity and expected to disappear quickly into everyday transactions.
KM#29 is sparsely documented in auction records, which likely reflects attrition rather than low original mintage.
