Kaufhaus des Westens — KaDeWe — issued its own token coinage for internal use, a practice common among large German department stores and industrial canteens in the early twentieth century. These pieces circulated within the store's own payment ecosystem, likely redeemable at in-house restaurants or service counters, insulating the business from small-change shortages that repeatedly disrupted German retail during the Wilhelmine and Weimar periods.
The iron composition places this almost certainly in the World War I or immediate postwar years, when copper and other nonferrous metals were requisitioned for the war effort and iron became the default substitute for low-denomination token issues across Germany.
