Soest's municipal notgeld was produced during the acute small-change crisis that followed World War One, when hoarding of metal coinage left German towns functionally unable to make change. Edler & Krische were among Hannover's more prolific notgeld printers of the period, supplying dozens of municipal clients across Lower Saxony and Westphalia simultaneously — which is part of why these issues varied so little in physical character from one town to the next.
The S81.1b suffix in the DeNG reference indicates a recognized variant within the Soest 2 Pfennig type, most likely differentiated by a minor typographic or color detail rather than a fundamental plate change.
