The "Señor de las Limas" figure, an Olmec jade sculpture discovered in 1965 near Veracruz, became the subject of considerable scholarly debate over whether it depicts a human child, a were-jaguar deity, or a sacrificial offering. The Mexican Mint incorporated it into this short-run bullion series alongside other pre-Columbian artifacts as part of a broader 1990s push to differentiate Mexican silver product from generic rounds. The series ran only three years before being discontinued.
