Cuba's gold coinage of 1915–16 was authorized under the Ley Monetaria of 1914, which established the republic's first independent currency system following decades of Spanish colonial coinage and a subsequent period of American dollar dominance. The 2 Peso denomination was the smallest gold coin in that series, and its low face value meant it saw genuine pocket circulation rather than being hoarded as a store of value the way the 20 Peso pieces were.
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint under contract — Cuba had no domestic mint facility — total mintage across both years was modest enough that circulated survivors outnumber uncirculated examples by a considerable margin in existing collections.
